Love is a Treasure

Love is a Treasure

Love has been described in a number of ways by the authors of three poems. ... Although they have different tones, they all have one view in common, Love is a treasure. The poems are; Adrienne Rich’s “Living in Sin, William Shakespeare’s “Let Me Not to the Marriage of True Minds”, and Sharon Olds’s “Sex Without Love”. ...
The poem “Living in Sin” by Adrienne Rich takes a religious approach to a specific woman’s love as seeing sin as loving without Gods blessing. This poem describes love as something of a fairytale, using a lot of similes and metaphors. “No dust upon the furniture of love” (2). People aren’t supposed to wish for a different life if they are already with the one they love. ... It seems that wine and cheese brings love about at night. ... Their love is also out of tune. ... In love isn’t loving someone, and her feelings are not completed by her mate. ...
In Sharon Olds “Sex Without Love” Love is shown to be kept clean by not separating it from love. “How do they do it, the ones who make love without love”? ... I understand it as a challenge to see if the reader is one who believes in love without sex or not. ... God come to the still waters, and not love the one who came there with them.” I see this as asking how one who has done something as bad as having had sex without love could ever face God. Since water is a symbol of purity, it was a symbol of virginity, or sex in the presence of true love.
