Similarities of Gift Giving in:
Homer, The Odyssey
And
Marcel Mauss, The Gift
The art of gift giving is broken down and explained in Marcel Mauss, The Gift. The article presents and explains varying reasons a person or “the people” as referred to in Homer, The Odyssey, may partake in such a ritual. Gift giving is the practice of exchanging valuable idolatries and/or prized possessions for one another. Although there are many underlying similarities, it must be noted that the meaning behind the gift giving is similar, as well as the art of giving.
For example, Mauss elucidates how a gift is generally closely attached to the person giving the gift.
