In this scene before Banquo’s speech, Macbeth and Banquo are introduced to the Weird Sisters. The witches speak to them only through the insight they are having, and tell Macbeth’s future. The witches recount how Macbeth is currently the Thane of Glamis, and then go on to tell that he will become the Thane of Cawdor, and then eventually be King of Scotland.
“Macbeth! ... Macbeth, why aren’t you pleased about the predictions these witches are making? ... ”
Banquo is very puzzled as to why Macbeth isn’t as excited as he is, in response to the news that Macbeth will become King of Scotland. To the reader, this also provokes questions as to what tactical move Macbeth may have to make him act this way. ...
