Perserverence

Condemnation was regularly executed in the early colonies of America. Nathaniel Hawthorne clearly communicates the unsympathetic views of these leaders when a strict law has been disobeyed. He also illuminates the other side of the spectrum, that is, the personal anguish and shame a sinner bears while enduring the penalty of punishment. Two of the main characters of The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne, and Arthur Dimmesdale, symbolize perserverance by showing stamina in the face of persecution, and persistance in living out the shame they both bear. Secluded in the wilderness, Hester lives a lonely life with her child who is the product of a great sin. She, however, was given the choice for exile, but instead weathered the penalty of living in her hometown and wearing a badge of disgrace.
