It was the summer of 1953. I was a junior in high school, working at the New Jersey seashore at an amusement ride arcade on the boardwalk in Ocean City along with one of my best friends that I grew up with. We were both jazz lovers, and when we saw that the Stan Kenton Orchestra was going to appear at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, about 10 miles up the shoreline, we vowed not to miss it. The day came, and we took the bus up to the Steel Pier. It was very early afternoon, since my friend had to work later on that day. Fortunately, I had the day off, so could spend as much time as desired. We walked out on the pier to the Marine Ballroom, where the Kenton band would be playing later on. We found an open door to the ballroom, and slipped inside. As we did, I heard one of the most beautiful sounds I think I've ever heard-- it was the Kenton sax section playing a portion of "Opus In Pastels".
