Beethoven’s middle period of music is also commonly referred to as his ‘heroic’ period. This was a time in Beethoven’s life when the French revolution and the hero of the revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, heavily influenced him. This time in Beethoven’s life was also scarred by his failing hearing. He contemplated taking his own life because of this, but rose above it in a heroic way, saying that his music was too important to him to do anything of the sort. All this is portrayed by ‘heroic’ qualities in Beethoven’s music, with the ‘Eroica’ symphony being the marking point for this change in thinking. This essay will discuss what the so-called ‘heroic’ characteristics are in Beethoven’s music from his middle period.
The middle period is said to have begun with Beethoven’s third symphony, ‘Eroica’. In the Macquarie dictionary, heroic (of style and language) means high-flown; noble; daring; heightened; extravagant; and of sentiment, which are all qualities of the ‘Eroica’ symphony.
