The Yankees-Red Sox battle in the American League East. The No. 1 story of the offseason has become the No. 1 story to follow in September. Boston sprinted to the AL East lead in April, but the Yankees stormed past the Red Sox and appeared to have the division title in hand with a 10 1/2-game lead Aug. 8. The Red Sox have since shaved seven games off the Yankees' lead by winning 19 of their last 23 games entering Friday. Boston's job now is to stay within three games of the Yankees until Sept.
