Mortimer told Sherlock Holmes that they were the footprints of a “gigantic hound! ... Sir Henry would have to walk home alone, giving the hound a chance to strike. ... Stapleton’s plan did work because the hound (“enormous coal black with firing bursting from its mouth, his muzzle and hackles and dewlap outlined as a flickering flame”) started chasing him, leaped and dragged him down. Holmes shot five (5) bullets into the hound and killed it. ... As they were on their way, they found Sir Henry’s black boot in the mud and they surmised that it was used to give the hound Sir Henry’s scent.
