Man is constantly searching for a sense of self in order to find meaning in his existence. The sense of self in man is frequently defined by his achievements. ... Thus, when his aspirations are suppressed or his relationships become insubstantial, there is no more sense of self and hence his life is rendered meaningless. However, the importance of this sense of self varies from one man’s perception to another. Therefore, the reaction to an absence of a sense of self also occurs in varying degrees.
Both the personae in Tessimond’s ‘The Man in the Bowler Hat’ and Clare’s ‘I Am’ tries to define themselves through their relationships with others. ...
In ‘The Man in the Bowler Hat’, the persona explores his relationship with the society. ... The persona is but only a workhorse for the country - someone ‘they call the nation’s backbone’. ... The symbolism of smoke, something which lacks form and shape, likens the persona to an inconspicuous identity in the society, further illustrating the persona’s insubstantiality. ... There is no one to share his pain and suffering, thus he feels that he is important to no one, and therefore he loses his sense of self. The personae in both the poems attempt to establish a sense of self through their relationships with others. However, both the personae also sense the insubstantiality of the relationships that they share with others. ... In ‘The Man in the Bowler Hat’, the persona feels he does not stand out. ... This is due to the utilitarian role of man as illustrated above. ... Instead of feeling like everyone else like the ‘The Man in the Bowler Hat’, the persona in ‘I Am’ feels left out. In the same way that both personae searches for a sense of self through their relationships with others, one feels unnoticed and the other feels alienated.
Both the personae in the poems also try to define themselves through their personal achievements.
