In what ways did ‘New Liberalism’ differ from earlier varieties of liberal thought?

New Liberalism is a form of Liberalism which was formulated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. New Liberalism and older forms of liberalism such as Classical Liberalism differ in a number of key ways . Yet, most varieties of liberalism, whether old or new, still adhere, to some extent, to the traditional characteristics of a liberal system . There are some key concepts of liberalism which run throughout the varieties, yet these concepts are updated and revised with each new version of liberalism . Differences and revisions between varieties include the role of the government , the interpretation of the concept of ‘liberty ’ and the way in which the market and economy is handled .

The key concepts involved in all varieties of liberalism are individualism, equality, toleration, freedom, consent and constitutionalism . Generally, these aspects come together in a certain way to create the varieties of liberalism . Individualism is a core principle of the liberal ideology . ... This is reflected in the liberal commitment to equal entitlements and rights. ... Freedom is a supremely important constituent of liberalism . The word ‘liberalism’ in fact comes from the Latin liber , meaning freedom. ... The amount of control the government has is one way in which New Liberalism differs from earlier forms of liberalism .



Classical Liberalism emphasizes the Liberal concepts of freedom and individualism to a great extent, and hence the government and the intervention it has with its citizens is minimal . ... New Liberalism is quite different to Classical Liberalism in this respect. ... The level of involvement the state has in the system is one way in which New Liberalism differs from earlier varieties of Liberalism. Yet this governmental interaction is dependent on other factors, such as the economy and the market .
