I was exuding confidence. We were in a large oddly shaped room, split up into groups. The room was rectangular but had extensions of square shapes here and there creating cubbies and larger, dark areas convenient for storage. It was nobody’s land, but everybody shared it. At one side were numerous boxes, not labeled, but placed there as though somebody was one day going to need to find something in them. When the time came it would not be an easy task. In another corner, a large corner of a hundred fifty square feet, tables were folded this way and that and chairs were leaning up against them folded as well. No light was directed in this area, so it appeared shadowy and dusty. I wondered how long it had existed in its current state. The other walls around our area were well lit and presented the primary purpose this room served: meetings that didn’t fit anywhere else. The table near the room entrance was filled with plates of pastries and donuts that we hadn’t finished earlier in the morning. The back end had a small stage with a podium. In the air was the smell of coffee that has been on the burner a little too long. It was strong with a tinge of burnt. Rene wasn’t using the podium as she gave us instructions for our feedback exercise. She stood before us with her back to one of the other walls. I had met Rene before at other company training functions. She was blond and pert with a pretty face, but it was wound tight as though there was more going on in her head than the obvious.
