Everyone has a dream; that is what America is all about. The ¡°American Dream¡± is the lifestyle everyone dreams of, coming home from work with a nice car and greeting your happy family. In the 1950s, the African Americans had to throw their ¡°American Dream¡± away because at that time they were considered inferior to the white population and had very few privileges. The play A Raison in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, illustrates the life of an African American family in the 1950s and their struggles to achieve their ¡°American Dream¡±. Three of the main characters, Mama, Beneatha, and Walter have dreams that are parallel to the ¡°American Dream¡± of the 1950s.
Mama, the eldest in the family, has a dream that she eventually achieves that is similar to the ¡°American Dream¡±.
