In Ernest J. Gaines’s novel, A Lesson Before Dying, (chapters 12-21) Grant Wiggins is forced by his Tante Lou to visit her best friend’s godson, Jefferson, while he is in prison awaiting his execution sentence. He is wrestling with the notion of love and religion and life on the plantation where he was raised. Grant goes to see Jefferson every Friday afternoon and all Jefferson does is either stare at the wall or call himself a hog and act accordingly. Grant implores Jefferson to show some sympathy for Miss Emma who goes home after visiting Jefferson and cries. She begs God to tell her what she did wrong to deserve for Jefferson to act this way toward her.
