In recent decades a number have studies have shown that there are several ways that frequent and indiscriminate television viewing can be harmful to the mental and physical health, particularly in children. The television, a major step in technology for man, has even been called the opiate of the masses.

     In kids and teenagers television viewing can be closely linked to poor school performance in a range of ways. Longer hours spent in front of the television means less time studying or doing homework. However there are other reasons for television promoting poor school performance. Television prevents thinking as it encourages passive learning and develops short attention spans.
