CREATIVE WRITING COURSEWORK As the first step towards your creative writing coursework you are going to create your own detective. This detective will be described by a character in the story. For example, you may choose to imagine yourself as the detective's side-kick, introducing the detective at the beginning of a new story. Think back to the grid and use the headings there to brainstorm some ideas for your character: (Gender; Age; Appearance (including costume); Temperament (e.g. grumpy; calm; stressed out etc.); Likes/dislikes; Other characteristics ) Good creative writing is not just about 'creating' a character. You may have the best list of ingredients ever for an amazing character - but unless you use effective descriptive writing techniques you will not succeed in making your detective live on the page. We now need to pause and revise what these techniques are. Look at the mnemonic and the exercises on the MASSIVE sheets. These will arm you with some more tools for successful writing. There are a number of writing frames which are designed to help you introduce your character in interesting ways. You do not have to use one of these but you should look at them carefully to gain ideas. These writing frames are designed to help you think about the plot of your story as well as the detective's character. For each point in the frame you need to brainstorm some ideas. Now you should be ready to go - you are aiming to write at least a side of A4 - more if you can manage it. WRITING FRAMES EXAMPLE ONE You are the side kick of the detective in your story. Introduce yourself. Devise an excuse for visiting the detective in question (e.g.- s/he has phoned you about a new case - give some tantalising details or you have called because you have heard of a new case which may interest them). Describe the occasion - the weather - your own mood - whether or not you are pleased/ worried/ reluctant/ fearful of the encounter you are about to have with the detective. You could describe the surroundings as you journey to the office/home/secret meeting spot - are you on the tube/ walking/ in a car?
