Harrison Bergeron, a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., illustrates life for people in the year 2081 through husband and wife, George and Hazel Bergeron. The story is about everyone being equal, physically and mentally, and the great lengths that the government makes to assure it. Vonnegut uses satiric comedy to describe the lifestyles, mentality and the way the government dehumanized the people in 2081. Vonnegut starts the story by explaining how the lifestyle of the people were; “Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” Hazel Bergeron has an “average intelligence”, while her husband George intelligence is “way above normal.” To have an average intelligence meant that a person couldn’t think about anything except in “short bursts.” For the few whose intelligence level was above average they were forced to wear mental handicap equipment.
