Man gets 17 years in robbery Superior Court Judge Russell Scott sentenced David Galiste of Seaside for his role in the 2003 robbery of Face the Music records By DAN LAIDMAN Herald Salinas Bureau Impassioned pleas from family members and a pastor did not spare a 20-year-old man from receiving a lengthy prison sentence Thursday for robbing a record store at gunpoint. Superior Court Judge Russell Scott sentenced David Galiste of Seaside to 17 years and four months imprisonment for his role in the 2003 robbery of Face the Music records on Fremont Boulevard. Shortly before he was convicted of armed robbery this February, Galiste disappeared, walking away from the Salinas courthouse during jury deliberations. An anonymous tip led authorities to arrest him in Fresno County in late April. In a fiery address Thursday, Galiste's attorney argued for a much lighter sentence. Lawyer Miguel Hernandez was joined by a relative and a pastor who said Galiste, a former Seaside High School student and aspiring mechanic, deserved mercy because of his youth and lack of a prior violent record. "The district attorney is trying to build this up to way more than it is," Hernandez said, likening the robbery to the bungling crimes in the Woody Allen film "Small Time Crooks." Prosecutor Michael Breeden had a different take, saying at a previous hearing that "it was only by the grace of God that this wasn't a felony murder case." Scott appeared to agree, imposing nearly all of the time sought by the prosecution and saying of the crime, "it's cold, it's callous, it's planned." Two men in masks entered the music shop on Feb.
