Tom Wolfe discovered in an article in 1970 stating that a Navy pilot had a 23% likelihood of dying in an accident, which didn’t even include dying in combatt. He said that it was the “psychological mystery that animated me in the writing this book.” At the time of when he started on this exciting book, at a time when it was considered unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Tom Wolfe is the author of over a dozen books, and this is said to be his greatest achievement yet. He earned his B.A. at Washington and Lee University and a Ph.D. in American studies from Yale University. He was from Richmond Virginia, and now lives in New York.
