“The Accidental Tourist” carries the theme of different journeys, emotionally and physically. ... The emotional journeys of the characters in the novel follow a similar track. ... As each of these characters embarks on these various stages in their lives, they eventually reach their destination with more understanding of themselves and the people around them.
Macon tries to live his life in the fashion of an ‘accidental tourist’, but he has not yet realised that there is no guidebook for the journey of life. ... He was becoming more open and caring towards outsiders and in turn, outsiders also view him as a different person. ... After all the work of building up confidence and fulfillment in life, he is moving back to the past. ... ” (Page 308) Although her view on her relationship with Macon has changed, we see that once again, all Sarah cares about is her own happiness. ...
Journeys often take a person to places that they’ve never visited and can change the person completely. Although Macon constantly goes on many physical journeys, they have not affected him in his thinking or decisions. ... It was through these journeys that we see the ability to reach out to others and how the characters embrace life’s risks and challenges.
