English Literature Essay
Mollie O’Connor
“How is love represented in two medieval ballads? Is love represented differently or alike in these medieval ballads?”
Comparison between: Barbara Allen and Lord Lovel
In the medieval ballads, Barbara Allen and Lord Lovel there is a common theme of love. However love is represented differently in the ballads, in the techniques used and gender roles, save for the implications of what it means to love, to be loved and what love is. Medieval ballads tend to be almost structurally the same and yet the ideas and philosophies provoked and implied can be in stark contrast to each other.
For all the obvious similarities of the two ballads there is one main and quite important difference; the gender reversal. The ballads differ in the sex of main character. ... This creates a key difference in the ballads. ... After a while Lord Lovell realises his love for her and returns to find that, out of grief she has died.
