SPIKE LEE Spike Lee is an African-American motion picture director who would of looked at Ali and said “ Now, there is a man who is not only an amazing fighter but he is a man that represents and understands the ideals of African-American people”. Because of Ali’s political views, incredible fighting ability and outspoken personality, Spike Lee believed that producing a film or documentary on one of the greatest ever boxer would be very profitable. NORMAN MAILER Norman Mailer was an author and journalist who was involved in a close relationship with Ali. Mailer had tremendous respect for Ali as an enthusiastic boxing fan. To Norman Mailer Ali signified an outstanding athlete and political leader, Mailer said “And I thought, my Lord, on top of everything, this man is a political leader”. Mailer was at the fight in Kinshasa to cover the event and write a book on the fight between Ali and Foreman. GEORGE PLIMPTON George Plimpton was asked by the editors of TIME magazine to go to Zaire and cover the event and write and article for their magazine. Plimpton had previously covered several of Ali’s previous fights, most notable the fight where he won the world championship against Liston in Miami. Plimpton regarded Ali as one of the best and most intelligent fighters of his time, he said “ I can’t think of a fighter who would give him much trouble. He would stay away from the sluggers, and outbox the boxers. He is probably the most intelligent fighter, in his prime, that I can think of in ring history”. THOMAS HAUSER Thomas Hauser was Ali’s biographer and like Norman Mailer he was interviewed during the film. Hauser saw Ali as the most outspoken black sportsperson ever and a man who suffered for his views. Hauser said “Countries go to war to get their names on the map and wars cost more than 10 million dollars”. He believed that Ali was going to go into the fight representing the people of Zaire and that when he arrived in Zaire that he would be received as a king. THE PEOPLE OF ZAIRE The people of Zaire knew that Ali was an outspoken black athlete that had come to represent their ideals. When Ali arrived at the airport in Zaire crowds of people came to welcome Ali to their country and Ali was given a King’s reception. The people of Zaire would have wanted to see Ali annihilate Foreman because they believed that Ali had come to fight for them and to bring recognition to the country of Zaire SPIKE LEE Spike Lee is an African-American motion picture director who would of looked at Ali and said “ Now, there is a man who is not only an amazing fighter but he is a man that represents and understands the ideals of African-American people”.
