Nathaniel Hawthorne’s family has a rich history of mistreating people in evil ways. So like most people he views evil overall as bad but understands it enough to write about it. In his stories, “Young Goodman Brown,” “The Minister’s Black Veil,” and “The Birth-Mark,” he used lots of symbolism and stated his opinion. Some of the stories like “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Minister’s Black Veil” were harder to understand. Hawthorne views evil as a necessity of life but something that happens usually because acceptance is not there. In “Young Goodman Brown,” Goodman doesn’t accept his Faith (his wife and his beliefs) and goes in search of other things. When Goodman leaves his wife he says, “My love and my Faith, of all nights in the year, this one night must I tarry away from thee.” His wife Faith is a symbol of his own faith. So when he says that he has to leave his faith he is going to go to a place where his faith would get into the way.
