The adaptation of John Irving’s profound novel, “The Cider House Rules”, by director Lasse Hallstrom has resulted in a film in which hard-hitting controversial issues are presented in a way that leaves audiences relatively free to grasp the underlying theme of the film, while aiding their own prejudices and experiences on the weighty subjects throughout. The main message to come out of this film is that if you didn’t make the rules, they don’t apply to you; as those who would never have to live by them generally make the rules in this film. ...
The screenplay created in “The Cider House Rules” is very effective in emphasizing the message, while maintaining the conciliatory positioning of the audience. ... Throughout the film the screenplay reinforces the non-confrontational positioning of the audience and establishes their empathy towards the characters, which is crucial in conveying the message that rules do not apply to those who did not make them. ... The beautiful setting of “The Cider House Rules” was the biggest element in this.
