‘Not only does Vincent have to convince other characters that he is capable of more than his Invalid status implies he also has to convince himself’ At the begging of the film Vincent is constantly reminded that he is to amount to nothing. Nothing more than what his DNA will let him. When Vincent was born his parents where told of possible causes of death and what he will become vulnerable to. This was because he was conceived the ‘old way’. Vincent’s own father rejected to pass down his name on to his first born son, he would save it for he second son, Anton "a son my father considered worthy of his name." Growing up knowing this Vincent would have been demoralised regularly, but this would not stop him to what he would soon aspire to. Vincent was to prove the system wrong and disregard what his genes were to let him become. Only blood brothers is not a game Anton will play. Vincent cuts his finger open as they play on the beach, but Anton is off into the surf. The boys play chicken instead, swimming as far out as they dare, to see who will swim back first, and of course it is always Vincent who loses. Anton's sense of superiority prevents him bonding with his own brother. He has to prove, over and over, which of them is made of the right stuff.
