National Charts
The New Zealand music charts are the official national charts published by The Recording Association of New Zealand. It is the most important chart in New Zealand.
The music charts show that the share of national music in the charts for the single sales is around 24 percent. The share of national music in the charts for album sales is around 25 percent. This means that one quarter of music in the charts for single- and album sales consists of national music by local artists.
With radio play we see an even higher percentage of national music; around 70 percent of the music that’s played on national radio consists of national music.
Charts for album- and single sales compared over a period over four weeks shows that the share of national music in the charts remains practically the same. ...
Government Funding
The share of national music in the charts can be influenced in a lot of ways. One of the methods used is the funding of national music and video clips. On May 18 2000, the Government of New Zealand announced more funding for NZ On Air for its New Zealand music work.
NZ On Air
NZ On Airs job is to promote and foster the development of New Zealand’s culture on the airwaves by funding locally-made television programmes, public radio networks and access radio, and to promote New Zealand music by funding music videos and radio shows. Broadcasting plays a powerful role in shaping a nation’s culture and identity, but is also important in getting national music listed in the charts.
NZ On Airs New Zealand music budget has been hovering around the $2 million a year mark for the last five or so years. That funding has bought (as at July 2000):
• 778 music videos since 1991;
• 73 hit discs, delivering 1,155 songs to every New Zealand radio station since 1993;
• 296 Radio Hits funding incentives, injecting $1,480,000 into local record companies for local record releases since 1993;
• Thousands of hours a year of local music radio shows on commercial radio stations and on the seven b. ...
Add to that the investment over the last two or three years in promotions - like putting a plugger on the road to work the hit discs, publishing the monthly Fresh Air magazine, doing double digits awards, joining in Kiwi Music Action Group projects like the annual NZ Music Week and NZ Music Showcase, etc.
