The colonizers systematic genocide, or the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, started in the 1700’s with the US government entering into treaties with the than powerful Indian nations. ... Between 1778-1871, the US Senate ratified no fewer than 371 treaties with the sovereign Indian nations. At that time the powerful, but not organized Indian nations were a force that could have wiped out the settlements of the colonizers. As the US became more powerful, and land and natural resources that the Indians possessed held value to the new nation, political decisions were made to make and break treaties, use of excessive military force, and outright theft to acquire Indian lands. The effect on the Indian people was relocation to areas that were not as desirable as their original lands. ... This began a downward spiral of alcohol, apathy and loss of the proud Indian heritage that once prevailed amongst 20 million people.
Today the once huge Indian reservations that were established by prior treaties are a fraction of what they once were. ... They are always looking for ways to minimize the Indian “burden”. Consequently the Indian reservations have the highest unemployment rates, poor health care service, and a lack of educational facilities, as basic as elementary school, available to the next generation of indigenous peoples living on the reservations. ... The Indian culture has adapted, and is now trying to incorporate what is remembered of the Indian ideology with the colonizers ideology, that is now so much part of their way of life.
The colonizers have tried their utmost to assimilate the Indians into the main stream of their ideology, the basic understanding of the action and reaction in nature, so prevalent in the Indian socio view are still inherent and a natural part of the indigenous people.
