What is Burgess saying about choice in Part two Chapter seven
In part two, chapter seven, Burgess is saying a lot about choice. This is the part of the book where the new reformed Alex is put on show in order to prove that the ‘Ludovico technique’ has indeed worked. As it turns out, this choice-limiting procedure has done its job and this is demonstrated to us via Alex’s “grotesque act of self-abasement”, as put by the prison charlie. Throughout this chapter, Burgess is presenting the two sides of the argument – for and against free choice. ... Once our humble narrator has been put through this ordeal of not being able to protect himself due to his helplessness, the prison charlie says in a “rich deep goloss” one simple word – “choice” – on its own.
