It is the application of bio knowledge and techniques to develop products. It’s the use of living organisms to make a product or run a process. Techniques used for plant and animal breeding, fermentation and enzyme purification is all biotech. Biotechnology may be defined as the use of biotechnical methods to modify the genetic materials of living cells so they will produce new substances or perform new functions. Examples include recombinant DNA technology, in which a copy of a piece of DNA containing one or a few genes is transferred between organisms or "recombined" within an organism. The use by industry of recombinant DNA, cell fusion, and new bioprocess techniques. Three main areas: health, food/agriculture and environmental protection. One section of biotechnology is the directed use of organisms by humans for production (beer, milk-products, skin). Naturally present bacteria are also involved in the mining industry in bioleaching. Other uses of biotechnology involve recycling, treatment of waste, cleaning up sites contaminated by industrial activities (bioremediation) or production of biowar agents.
