Despite the scale of the problem, there is limited research into suicide and attempted suicide in the elderly, however some risk factors for suicide and attempted suicide have been identified. Risk factors for suicide in the elderly include, older age, male gender, living alone, bereavement (especially in men), psychiatric illness, depression, alcohol misuse, previous suicide attempt, vulnerable personality traits, physical illness, and pain.
