Discussion: Attempted and completed suicide in the elderly
Suicide has become a major health problem in the Western world, with suicide becoming the eighth leading cause of death in the USA . Despite the scale of the problem, there is limited research into suicide and attempted suicide in the elderly, however some risk factors for suicide and attempted suicide have been identified.
Risk factors for suicide in the elderly include, older age, male gender, living alone, bereavement (especially in men), psychiatric illness, depression, alcohol misuse, previous suicide attempt, vulnerable personality traits, physical illness, and pain.
