Ernest Gaines definitely captures the readers’ attention in the novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. ... Gaines continuously portrays the white people as bad and evil against the black people. ... Gaines describes the Patrollers that helped the Sesch army kill all the blacks as “poor white trash. ... Now Gaines has told of whites that kill innocent victims. ... Gaines was able to make the white plantation owner a dishonest man that cheats the disadvantaged. ... Gaines used this to prove dishonesty in friendship and a cowardly act only to receive acceptance. ... Gaines portrays him as the son of a rich white man, Robert Samson, but his mother is black. ... Gaines really makes the white man look bad by having him deny the black children the badly needed toothbrushes they never had. ... Gaines has set her up as the wolf in sheep’s clothing. ...
Even though Ernest Gaines wrote this biased novel about racism and prejudice he was able to focus the readers attention on the strong positive qualities of his main character, Miss Jane Pittman.
