The War on Working Children
Iqbal Masih was a four year old Pakistani when his father sent him to work at a carpet factory. ... Masih never received schooling, but he knew that these working conditions were wrong. One day he gathered up the courage to run away to the police and tell them of his working conditions. ... BLLF was amazed at his courage and used is testimony to save other children suffering through exploitation. ... His plan was to become a lawyer to help free more innocent children. Of all the helpless children experiencing child exploitation, Masih had come out on top. ... So while the 12 year olds of Glenview were all at home hunting for eggs and opening Easter baskets, Iqbal was receiving his reward for his part in the battle against child exploitation- a bullet in the chest. ... The exploitation of children has clearly been a problem for what seems like eternity. “Child exploitation is an act that victimizes children or takes advantage of them for selfish purposes,” and (Dictionary. ... According to Child Slavery in Modern Times, there are about “200 million children in the world working that should be in school” (10). ... According to Children in Chains, “50,000 women and children enter the United States each year to be used as slaves” (Corradini 38). ... Fortunately, women like “Florence Kelly worked to have a law passed prohibiting employment of children under 16 “(Florence 1-2).Today still, the exploitation of children is most common in developing countries experiencing poverty ( ? ... Reasons why children end up working either through labor or prostitution are numerous. ... Children can end up with the working lifestyle because of debt paid through labor, being tricked into it with empty promises, being kidnapped, or illegal immigration. They aim for the “children because they’re less likely to complain and they don’t have to pay them as much” (Newman 10). ... Although the poverty problem creates a hell for the children growing up in these countries it works out great for the visitors and owners of these illegal locations. ... NAMBLA is not the only supporter of the exploitation of children in poor countries, hundreds of business corporations that benefit from the hard work of children also approve. This problem needs to be solved; and these children have to go back to leading normal lives.
Two organizations feel that they have a method to solve this epidemic of exploited children. Since the children are the targets for exploitation, as well as those experiencing the pain it would make sense to have former exploited children join to come to a solution.
