Invariably it happens each semester, a student will approach an instructor with the question: How can I get an “A” in English 101?” And, each time I hear this question I wince at the thought because I know that its always going to be followed up with the following statements and questions: “I have to get an “A” in English 101 in order to fulfill a requirement; and, I always got “As” in High School—why am I not getting an “A” in this class? ... First and foremost to begin answering this question as to how to get an “A” in the English 101 classroom, the student must cease to place themselves in the role of victim.
