cinematic escape

As a young immigrant from Ukraine, about to embark on a journey of kindergarten and McDonalds, Philadelphia seemed like an unfamiliar paradise. Fifteen years later, my family and I still reminisce about that significant time in our lives. Strangely, along with memories of the new jobs and schools and even a new language, my mother and I often recall our first movie experiences together. It may sound peculiar, but the cinema had a considerable impact on our adjustment to a new culture. Along with helping us learn the English language and see the assorted ways of life through characters in various films, we used movies as recreation during that stressful time.
