At the beginning of the movie there is a voice over of Gilbert describing the people in his life and where he lives but he leaves the description of himself last and all he tells us about him is his name. “…and I’m Gilbert, Gilbert Grape.” The dialogue shows that Gilbert feels less important to everyone else and that he has a low self-esteem. This is because everyone around him has something about them he can tell which shows their character but Gilbert is unsettled with his life so he feels there is nothing to say. The order of dialogue helps show how Gilbert doesn’t feel like he is significant and he is uncertain with his place in life. ... During the movie the Grape family have an upset meal where they start off talking about Arnie’s birthday party. Gilbert’s body language at the table during the discussion is sloppy and disinterested and it is shown through him slumping at the table and his facial expression of frowning.
