Reconciliation The question of Reconciliation remains an issue for Australians to resolve, to start healing the wounds Australia’s indigenous population, but there are no quick or easy answers. Does it require a treaty? Does it require a simple saying of the word “sorry”? Up until the 1960’s, lighter skinned aboriginal children were removed from their aboriginal environment, in order to bring them up as white. This was because of the racial belief that lighter skinned aboriginals were of part European ancestry (not always the case), and a European upbringing was preferred to that of an upbringing among “black people”. All too often, the children ended up in institutions were they were not only deprived of love but worse still lived in misery. By white people who take the aboriginals side, this time was referred to as “the stolen generation”, but government ministers are objecting to the emotive language used, and saying that they were not “stolen”, they were just taken away, and that it was never a complete generation.
