Oedipus is responsible for his own downfall
“Apollo, friends, Apollo has laid this agony upon me; not by his hand, I did it”,
Oedipus explains why he pierced his eyeballs. Was Oedipus right? I believe he was right,
and that he made this statement when was fully aware of his fate and how his actions
Contributed to and exacerbated his downfall, hence he says “not by his (Apollo’s) hand, I
did it”.
Oedipus’s downfall constituted of his isolation, loss of respect from the people of Thebes, exile, loss of physical sight, loss of family and his self loathing. He was responsible for most of these components of his downfall, with exceptions to his loss of family and self loathing.
