Hamlet’s, “The Murder of Gonzago” is designed to find out if Claudius really did murder his father. Hamlet set up a play to be acted out by the players, which was to be viewed by the king. The play was a re-enactment of the murder scene, in which Claudius killed king Hamlet. Hamlet’s intention to “catch the conscience of the king” (1, iii, 603) relied on king Claudius identifying with the characters in his play. ...
