Throughout the film Gilbert has learned a great deal about what is important to him in
We see Gilbert gain knowledge and understanding of what is important to him. We see the character of Gilbert go through many stages and phases of life. Each time he learns something and this has an impact on: his attitudes, belief and way of thinking and seeing things. Many themes and issues are raised in the film, such as love, friendship(s) and his attitudes towards others changed. From the outset of the film, the viewer sees Arnie and Giblet’s relationship. The viewer gets the impression, as though Gilbert is obliged to take care of Arnie and gets the feeling as though what Gilbert is doing is not a form of helping. The relationship between Gilbert and Arnie and also between Gilbert and his mother does not change dramatically, although his attitudes and thoughts of his mother do change substantially. We see at the start, where Gilbert and tucker are fixing the house and Gilbert intentionally helps one of the local kids get a glimpse of his obese mother.
