“Australia’s sportswomen are playing harder, faster and more professionally than ever and yet they still struggle for consistent, long-term media coverage. ... 26) With this in mind it must be observed that, the media in all its different forms ultimately serves to ‘reinforce societal attitudes, beliefs and values,’ including those relating to sport. ... It is then imperative view the history of sport in regard to its involvement within the evolution of society in Australia, the history of women and their direct involvement with sport, the contemporary presentation of women’s sport by the media. ... The elaboration of these areas will inevitably display that the social conception of women’s sport will remain unchanged until the media portrays it in a different light. ...
“Powerful agents of socialisation in our society include parents and family, peer groups, religious authorities, schools and the mass media” (Amezdroz, 1999) These agents are the means by which our social conception is shaped. ... The most powerful socializing agent that pervades our whole society is the media” (Hocking, 2001, p. 127)
The media as an agent of socialisation communicates sport’s importance in our lives. But just as sport is critical to the media, the media is critically important to sport, “Side by side survival. ... 32) There are too many examples of, sports and the sex participating in them, which have been made popular among the Australian population to ignore or deny the direct link between media coverage and the popularity of particular sports. Consistent media coverage does assist in providing a sport with profile, positive role models, increased spectator appeal and lucrative sponsorship opportunities,
“Remember the early days of international Rugby Union. Little or no media coverage:
“Try hard game,” as my eldest son said. ... Netball and its premier competition, broadcast on the ABC, receive the most media coverage of all Australian women’s sports; yet only possess “1/2 %” of air time within its round robin season.
