Urbanization, yo. Ah the influence of rap and hip hop on suburban kids, from the perspective of an alternative music listenter, what could be more biased? One could say hip hop is a positive thing, it was music with a message, something that spoke out for those who lived in low-income neighbourhoods. I have had Rap and Hip Hop explained to me in several different ways. As I see it Rap is what we would see as 50-cent, Dr.Dre, and Eminem, who usually sing about drugs, cars, money and women. Hip hop though, has a message. It was formed in the early eighties and nineties by various artists, the most notable being Run DMC and others I don't know the names of. It was a statement against society and poverty, it was music by people who grew up in underpriveledged neighbourhoods, and for kids in the same place. Hip Hop would leave a huge mark on the music industry and would remain for many years after, and to come. Now, the first Hip Hop artists were black, and the music was directed towards the black-male demographic in the low-income areas of cities.
