Presence of Irony in Oedipus the King
Irony can be defined as the opposite of what is expected. Socrates uses irony profusely all throughout Oedipus the King. If used correctly, irony can effectively create or strengthen specific elements of any written work. Through his adeptness in the use of irony, he successfully produces the elements of character development and foreshadowing throughout the play. Not only does irony help to predict the tragic fate of Oedipus, the central character, but it also helps in exposing his main flaws as a character. In Oedipus the King, character development of the central character, Oedipus, is enhanced by the use of irony. Specifically, Sophocles utilization of irony is vital in the development of Oedipus as a flawed character. One of Oedipus main flaws is his belief that he can avoid or change his destiny. Oedipus sought out the predictions of the oracle who reluctantly told him of his prophecy. It was after this that Oedipus made several conscious attempts to avoid his fate. ... It is ironic that in attempt to flee his fate by running away from Corinth, Oedipus actually set his fate in motion, meeting and killing his father during his travels.
