In the wake of the 2000 Presidential Election debacle considerable attention was paid to the question of election reform. Most of this discussion related to the mechanics of casting and counting ballots; how to count ballots with hanging, pregnant or dimpled chads, when and how to conduct a recount, and the role of the courts in deciding the outcome of a disputed election. ... We are often faced on election day with a choice of the lesser of two evils. ... Often the choice in the primary is no better than the choice on election day. ... Election laws often make it difficult to launch a third party campaign, and when one is successfully mounted it is often sabotaged by media predictions that the candidate stands no chance of election and admonitions not to "throw your vote away". ... What is worse however is that a candidate need not be rich as long as he or she is prepared to sell out the public interest to the highest bidder.
