Nigeria is comprised of 250 ethnic groups, and this alone would make any type of governmental transition a very difficult one. ... For a true democracy to work all these ethnic group would have to come to some sort of a universal agreement to set the rules of power and governance. ... Since its independence from Great Britain 44 years ago, Nigeria has had about 15 years of sporadic democracy compared to 29 years of military rule. ... Most of these authoritarian rulers have taken advantage of this weakness and seized power claiming they would adopt “a new better democracy,” but would eventually renege on their promise when they tasted the power of ruling their country. ... Fraud and corruption have also played a major part in the failure of democracy in Nigeria. ... Literacy, employment, quality of life, availability of food all tend to be deciding factors of a voter in a new democracy when deciding on choosing a leader. ... One of the biggest challenges for Nigeria’s transition into democracy has been successful elections. ... I believe that the charm of having a democracy will wear off on the Nigerian people if results don’t seem evident right away. This could lead back to the loop of military rule with sporadic democracies, a turn in the wrong direction for democracy that will lead to more suffering and blood shed.
