The 13th Amendment states”All me are created equal”, but in the eyes of some that does not exist. Racism is a particular kind of discrimination based on skin tone and /or country(origin). Racism against African Americans is something we commonly saw in earlier years. “White” people first made “black” people slaves and made them work long hard hours for them each day. The civil war came around and the North beat the South so all slaves were said to be free and supposed to be set free. “Blacks” were not allowed to drink out of the same water fountains, eat at certain restaurants, go to the same schools or set in the same seats on buses as“white”people. On December 1st, 1955 an African American women name Rosa Pariss refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. She was arrested for this incident. This caused the Montgomery bus boycott and African Americans refused to ride the bus and this hurt the transportation economy. The boycott lasted 381 days and finally went to the Supreme Court in November 1956 where it was ruled that segregation was unconstitutional. In the early 1950's racial segrigation in public schools was very normal. Although all the schools in a given district were “equal”, most “black” schools were far inferior to “white” schools. In Topeka, KS., an African American third grader named Linda Brown had to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard to get to “her” school even though there was a school only seven blocks away.
