The Issue of Sexual Harassment and Stalking May 17, 2004 What is Sexual harassment? Sexual harassment is one of the biggest problems facing our schools and businesses today. Sexual harassment is a growing problem in the society. “The definition of sexual harassment is any unwanted or inappropriate sexual attention” That includes touching, looks, comments, or gestures. Often sexual harassment makes the victim feel guilty, but it is important for the victim to remember that it is not their fault, the fault lies totally on the person who is the harasser. Many times fear is involved in sexual harassment because it isn't about physical attraction, it's about power. In fact, many sexual harassment incidents take place when one person is in a position of power over the other, an example of this would be a work setting. In today's society there has been confusion over what distinguishes sexual harassment. It has been agreed that physical touching in an unwanted way is classified as sexual harassment. However, all inappropriate language with a sexual comments such as sexual jokes and indecent comments reported or not, is also sexual harassment. The concept of sexual harassment is relatively new. Sexual harassment existed before the sixties, but people had no way to talk about it since there was no term by which to name the experience.
