“Legalization of Marijuana” What kind of person do you picture when you think of a marijuana smoker? Do you think of a hippie with long hair who never showers? Do you think of a gang member that shoots and kills people? If you’re like most people you find this to be the stereotype of most people that smoke pot. When in actuality most people have smoked marijuana and have led normal healthy lives. President Bill Clinton has even admitted to smoking marijuana. “66 million Americans have smoked marijuana in the past year” (Stroup, n.p) Marijuana, although safer than alcohol and tobacco, remains to be illegal. Marijuana should be legalized as long as it is enjoyed in a responsible manner. In the early 1900’s tobacco had the same propaganda as marijuana does presently. Some propaganda includes, “It makes you stupid. It turns teenagers into juvenile delinquents. It ruins academic performance, and impairs efficiency at work.” (Sullum, n.p.) Henry Ford wrote a book about the effects of tobacco smoke which claimed, “[cigarette smoke] has a violent action on the nerve centers, producing degeneration of the cells of the brain.” (Sullum, n.p.) We know this is untrue about cigarette smoke. Marijuana also has the same false claims. In 1986, the Partnership for a Drug- Free America was founded to lie to kids and tell them not to try drugs. They wanted to teach kids that marijuana is “a bad drug that can hurt your body.” (Stevenson, n.p.) Yet, the commercials that were aired, to give marijuana this terrible vibe, gave no true facts as to why marijuana is such a bad drug. In comparing marijuana to cigarette smoke the effects are almost the same therefore, marijuana should be legal. In the 1920’s Congress tried to get rid of the use of alcohol.
