It soon was apparent that the birds were being poisoned by earthworms, the principal food of robins. The spraying of DDT on the Elm Trees had caused the worms to ingest the chemical through fallen leaves, which was then in turn transferred to the birds. ... Not only were robins affected, but also the 45 other species of birds with worms in their diet had similar results, species of birds farther up on the food chain such as hawks and owls were found poisoned as a result of DDT as well.
