opposition to nazism 1933 1945

... During 1933-1945, there were some people who opposed the Nazis, especially as disillusion and discontent began to surface during the war, but because the opposers were so few in number, their actions proved ineffective. The three main reasons for this were that organised political opposition was dealt with quickly and ruthlessly, an open and efficient system of terror was swiftly put in place and a high level of consensus was achieved by the Nazi for their regime.

In the first few weeks after the Nazi takeover, one of the initial actions of the Nazis was to deal with left wing opposition. ... Waves of arrest in 1934-36 and again in 1941-4 prevented any regrouping of the left wing and as a result there was almost no leadership on the left to plan and execute effective opposition. ...

The churches in Nazi Germany were not united in their attitudes to Nazism as the Protestant Churches (divided into the German churches) were tolerated by the regime but the Confessing Church, whose clergy ended up in concentration camps, opposed the Nazis. However even the Confessing Church, who condemned the Nazis from the pulpit, enforced a lack of effective opposition against the Nazis. ... This proved to be effective opposition from the churches as corroborated with the growing public concern, the programme was brought to an end, but not before the deaths of approximately 75 000 victims. However, although the church did not believe in the treatment of the Jews by the Nazis, there was no opposition put forward about this, most likely because of the dim fate of the churches if they had done so. ... ” Therefore, although the White Rose had active opposition against the Nazis, they were quickly halted and therefore, their opposition became totally ineffective.

Although the workers began to resent the Nazi regime, as virtually all their remaining rights were lost, there was little active opposition that took place.
