Women of 5th Business
The women of 5th Business have a profound effect on Dunstable Ramsay’s Journey. They are a main reason for the person he became by the end of the novel. The women lead him to the experiences that had him “re-born”. They made him realize things about himself he had never realized, opened his eyes to truths hard to deal with. Mrs.Dempster captures the imagination of Ramsay as he spent countless hours watching over the weakened woman. Dustan’s mother, Mrs.Ramsay, as well as others of Deptford pushed Dunstan away from the small community. The narrowness of Mrs.Ramsay and the rest of community pushed Dunny out of Deptford and into the army. While struggling to fit around the soldiers he was injured in battle and put under the care of Diana Marfleet. She was the nurse in charge of looking out for Dunny and was his first lover, whom he almost married.
