Introduction
Purpose
To get a deeper understanding of access control systems; how these work and what different kinds of systems there are.
Method
By reading material regarding access control and other sources covering this issue, get an understanding for access control systems and describe them in this report.
Delimitations
I will write this report about systems controlling access of objects for different users. It will not go in to how passwords should be chosen or other security measures that can be taken but only the technical issues of access control.
Access control exists in order to prevent people from accessing information they aren’t allowed to. Because there are several different ways of storing and accessing information, there is also a need for many different access control systems.
Access control is one of the most important elements in computer security. ... These are the kinds of access controls we see everyday and don’t even react to them being there. There are, however, other types of access control that we don’t see but are yet so important. ... Unfortunately, the world we live in today is not as honest as one would hope, hence different types of access control is needed and is also implemented everywhere around us.
This report will give an understanding of the different types of access controls that can be used in a system. It will look in to which subsystems that are available for protection against intrusion and fraud in an access control system.
The main reason for an access control system to be implemented in a company is to reduce the flow of sensitive information to people it doesn’t concern. ... In this report we will look in to the simplest things that can be done, such as improving the door locks of the office, to more advanced technological access controls such as firewalls and encryption of data. ... 385ff)
All of these networks have among other things one thing in common; a need to control who has access to what. ...
Access control is important in order to protect the integrity of the users as well as ensuring the confidentiality of information that should be kept secret. ... To prevent this it would also be an idea to have some kind of control of who comes and leaves at what times. ... If someone has, for example, seen a user’s code over his shoulder and then steals the card they will automatically have access to the premises where the hardware is kept. ... This card contains information about the user and can be used to access buildings/rooms as well as computers. ... (Link 1) These biometrical identification devices can not only be used for granting access to the location of the computer but also be a part of the login-procedure at the workstation. ...
Physical protection is important when it comes to access control even if it isn’t the first thing that comes to your mind. ...
Call-back modems
This type of access control is based on that the user connects to a server using a modem. ... This way an intruder would have to be in physical location that has been predetermined to the server in order to get access to any information at all. ... There are, however, ways to control that only users connecting from certain IP-addresses are allowed access to the system. ...
Controlling access
There are some different ways of protecting files and other resources from unauthorized users. ... They also decide which access the different users should have to the files. Some users might only need read-access to a file while other, perhaps more trusted users, will be able to change the data in the file. These lists of user rights tend to grow very large when many users have access to each other’s files. It is also a time consuming process of removing the access to a specific file for many users since the computer will have to search many lists to remove the file access for all the users.
